Whether volunteering in Chile, scouting native gardens in Chicago or interviewing the city manager of Sanibel Island, the award-winning Terry Writers can handle the assignment. To get the story, journalists Cliff and Pat Terry have slept in open-sided cabins along the Peruvian Amazon, locating the outhouse — and a tarantula — by kerosene lantern. They’ve wolfed down sweet and sour Spam at Spam Jam in Austin, Minnesota, trekked through mosquitoes and mud on the uncrowded Superior Hiking Trail north of Duluth, and stood in awe at a sunrise near Lhasa, Tibet. Closer to home (Chicago), they’ve searched for eagles along the Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. Yes, there is a Keokuk. And they write about it. But travel articles are not all they research, write and photograph. Cliff Terry, former Chicago Tribune feature writer and movie critic, also has broad business-writing experience. He’s interviewed the president of Wilson Sporting Goods for a Finnish magazine, ghosted a book on pioneer African-American industrial designer Chuck Harrison, and written a history of Hartmarx Corporation. He also has authored “Chicago: Off the Beaten Path” and “Travel Safe” for Globe Pequot Press. Pat Terry, former Chicago Tribune writer, focuses on home/garden, nature and general features that range from native gardening (Midwest Home Chicago magazine) to endangered penguins and redeveloping a notorious housing project (Chicago Sun-Times). She’s also written economic outlooks for homegoods magazines and fourth-grade curriculum (“Rare Friends”) for Brookfield Zoo. Her travel photos appear in numerous publications. |
